Factors in the Behavior of Ground Water in a Ghyben-Herzberg System

چکیده

':: The Ghyben-Herzberg balance is not by any means universal along ocean coasts and . one may presume that it is well exemplified along only a small fraction of continental coasts. Otherwise it would probably be better known. Its somewhat limited occutrence is due to the requirement of rocks within a certain range of permeability, sufficient rainfall, and lack of specialized structure in the rocks. The rock structure must in the main be fairly homogeneous and be isotropically permeable if a well-characterized GhybenHerZberg system is to develop.

Prediction of sea water intrusion for mining activity in close precincts of sea shore

The mining lease area of Surka [District Bhavnagar, Gujarat (India)] is located within 6-12 km horizontal distance of sea shore of Gulf of Cambay. Whenever, there will be onset of lignite extraction, there will be always a threat of sea water intrusion into the mining lease area due to its close proximity to seashore. This article describes the prediction of sea water intrusion into the lease a...

Impact of coastal land reclamation on ground water level and the sea water interface.

Land reclamation in coastal areas may have a significant effect on local ground water systems. Steady-state analytic solutions based on Dupuit and Ghyben-Herzberg assumptions are derived to evaluate this effect. Two situations are considered, both with ground water flow resulting from precipitation recharge: the coastal aquifer of an extensive landmass and an island. The results show that after...

Freshwater and Salt Water Interface Flow in GFLOW

In coastal areas groundwater quality may be degraded by intrusion of salt sea water into freshwater aquifers. The salinity of the groundwater changes its physical properties: an increase in salinity increases both the density and viscosity of the groundwater. These density differences are the primary driving force that allows salt water to move into the coastal aquifer, forming a salt water “we...

A correction factor to account for mixing in Ghyben-Herzberg and critical pumping rate approximations of seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers

[1] The classic Ghyben‐Herzberg estimate of the depth of the freshwater‐saltwater interface together with the Dupuit approximation is a useful tool for developing analytical solutions to many seawater intrusion problems. On the basis of these assumptions, Strack (1976) developed a single‐potential theory to calculate critical pumping rates in a coastal pumping scenario. The sharp interface assu...

Hydrogeological investigations and numerical simulation of groundwater flow in the karstic aquifer of northwestern Yucatan, Mexico

A freshwater lens underlain by saltwater exists beneath the entire northern Yucatan karst plain, Mexico. Water levels recorded in this plain, during the period June 1987 April, 1989, were used to map the water table, identify inland hydrogeologic boundaries, and estimate the thickness of the freshwater lens using the Ghyben-Herzberg relation. The water table under most of northwestern Yucatan i...
